Which do you prefer, aerobic or anaerobic exercises? Do you know the difference? Does it make a difference? Not really. The words aerobic and anaerobic represent different ways the body gets energy for exercise.

In aerobic, meaning with oxygen, exercise involves or uses oxygen to fuel metabolism, and the main fuel comes from burning fat. This type of exercise involves relatively less muscle fatigue. Aerobic exercise is of moderate intensity. Anaerobic, or without oxygen, exercise is higher-intensity exercise where the muscles rely on fuels other than oxygen. Anaerobic exercise burns sugar as the main source of fuel. Either way, you still burn fat.

Light exercise cleans out lactic acid (a waste product) and stimulates cell regeneration. To burn fat, rather than sugar, there are several things to remember:

- Breathe deeply. Use your diaphragm to draw in air, through your nose, and hold the breath for a few seconds. Then exhale through your mouth.

- Exercise at a comfortable level. If 10 is extreme exertion, exercise at a 7. You should still be able to carry on a normal conversation while you work out. Doing this for 45 minutes a day will restore energy and make you feel great!

You may think you don’t have time to exercise, but you should make time. The benefits to your health and well-being far outweigh the cost in time. Since proper exercise increases energy, you won’t need to sleep as much as you have in the past. So, take a little of your nighttime sleep to exercise. You’ll be better for it.

Or use your lunch break to exercise instead of having a heavy lunch that adds fat. Your productivity will increase. You’ll be more alert and energetic. And the time you save in added productivity can be applied to those other important tasks you aren’t willing to trade for exercise.

Rebounding (also known as cellularise) is a great way to get aerobic exercise. A rebounder is a mini-trampoline that provides excellent, non-impact exercise through bouncing. If you have access to this type of equipment, try it! It’s a fun exercise for all ages and types, and it’s less expensive than other types of exercise equipment.

Whether you have access to a rebounder or not, use any break or time out to get in some movement and deep breathing. Any type of exercise will have great benefits. It will improve your heart, making it stronger and larger. Deep breathing will make your lungs stronger, too. The movements you use to exercise promote proper blood flow to your joints as well as to your muscles, so you reduce possible joint pain by engaging in regular exercise. And research suggests positive links between exercise and overall health – preventing almost every type of disease.

Many of us spend most of our days sitting crouched at our desk, typing away at our computer, focused on the job at hand. And while we do this, our bodies get stiff, tired, and full of natural toxins. Proper exercise flushes the system and stimulates internal organs, including the brain. It restores energy and improves attitude.

As a fitness professional, I often get asked what the best types of exercises and workouts are for losing stubborn stomach fat in order to bring out visible six pack abs. The problem is that most people with excess stomach fat looking to try to uncover their abs are searching for some “miracle abdominal workout” that is going to slash the fat off their abs in no time.

The thing is… they are going about the problem entirely the wrong way! The truth is that you don’t lose stomach fat by doing ab workouts. So the answer to the age-old question of “What is the best ab workout for fat loss?” is…

Not an ab workout at all!

The problem is that focusing most of your efforts on abs exercises and ab workouts to try to flatten your belly and bring out 6-pack abs is simply wasting your time from doing the REAL workout techniques that will acutally reduce your body fat for good.

If I were to choose an answer as to what the best exercises are for losing belly fat, my answers would include full body exercises like various forms of squats, lunges, deadlifts, clean & presses, snatches, swings, presses and pulls, mountain climbers, sprinting, etc. These types of exercises would encompass a much higher percentage of the workouts I would design instead of abs exercises directly targeting the midsection. The way you combine those full body exercises into a strategic workout that maximizes your metabolism is also very important.

Don’t get me wrong… I do recommend a certain amount of exercises that directly target the abdominals and core area, but this is only a small fraction of the programs I design for my clients as your time is better spent focusing on the full body exercises that stimulate the greatest hormonal and metabolic changes within the body. In addition, a side-effect of training using mostly full body multi-joint combo exercises are that you indirectly work your entire core area even though you are not specifically trying to target the abs.

Keep in mind that the most important aspect of losing body fat to see your abs is actually in the nutrition arena. No matter how hard you workout, if your diet is full of junk, then your abs will be covered with fat. Nutrition is simply the “king of getting six pack abs”.

So lets clear this up for good…

Stop wasting so much of your time focusing on crunches, situps, leg lifts, and all those silly worthless “ab gadgets” in your efforts to try to develop flat six pack abs. Instead focus on high intensity combinations of full body lifts using combination multi-joint exercises all strategically combined into highly effective workouts. Couple that with a clean diet full of unprocessed natural whole foods as close to their natural state as possible, and those elusive 6-pack abs will be in your future in no time!

This is due in part to the fact that many of us have desk jobs where we rarely use our stomach and abdomen muscles. For some, we can link it to a diet laden with fast foods and alcohol.

Before beginning a discussion of abdominal exercises and equipment, it is important to point out that even the best ab machine will not help you loose fat in your stomach area. Abdominal exercise equipment can tone and shape your muscles, but the only way to loose the fat is to consume more calories than you take in. Exercise will help you to burn more calories than you take in, but it is a total body process not just for certain areas.

It is important to realize that even though some people are in good physical shape, genetically they are not ever going to have a flat stomach. Some people’s bellies have a slight curve to them, no matter how many crunches they do. Even so, you will find these exercises and equipment helpful in defining, toning and strengthening your

abdominal muscles.

Abdominal Exercises & Equipment

There are several kinds of abs exercise equipment. A machine that works very well, the Roman Chair, is not used just as an ab machine. It is a common piece of equipment found at the gym but it can be used to perform a very effective ab exercise. The Roman Chair is comprised of two stationary, parallel arms and a straight, padded back and is somewhat tall. There is no seat.

When working on abs, the best way to use this piece of equipment is to place your forearms flat on each armrest, with your back firmly against the padding. You should have the Roman Chair set high enough that your legs dangle straight down when you are in position. Next, you can slowly bring your knees toward your chest and hold, then extend them down to the original position. This exercise was named number two in a recent study done by San Diego State University for top.

According to the survey, the best ab exercise is the Bicycle maneuver. This is a common exercise that most people are familiar with. As it turns out, this familiar exercise is surprisingly one of the best exercise for working your abdominal muscles. To do the exercise correctly, lie on a mat and press your lower back flat. Put your hands beside your head. Bending your knees towards your chest and contracting your ab muscles to a 45 degree angle is the next step. Bring your right elbow in contact with your left knee.

Alternate the movement with the opposite elbow and knee and repeat. Correct performance of this exercise will cause you to feel it in your abdominals and sides.

Leg Crunches are comparable to the Bicycle but with crunches, your upper body does most of the movement. Lie on the mat again with your lower back pressed flat. Place your hands at your sides or by your head, whichever is more comfortable. The exercise will lose it’s effectiveness if you put pressure on your arms.

Your legs should be lifted straight up into the air and bend your knees slightly. Squeeze your abdominal muscles and then lift your torso up off the mat toward your knees. Place your back flat down on the mat into the original position. After relaxing your abdominal muscles, then repeat. Breathing is one thing not to be forgotten.
Using an exercise ball is another way to do crunches that some feel are more effective than regular crunches. Sitting on the ball, place your feet on the ground about a foot apart. Start by rolling your back cautiously on the ball until you are lying on your back fully extended. Contract your abs while lifting your upper body off the ball to a 30-degree angle. You will repeat this process after you return to the original position.

Exercise balls are very versatile and fit into most people’s budget making them a great choice for abs exercise equipment. A stretch band is often a good choice for an inexpensive piece of fitness equipment. These stretchy bands can be comprised of lycra or nylon and sometimes rubber. These are often called resistance bands because they let you work a muscle group while the resistance of the band stabilizes the opposite muscle group. It is good for stretching and strengthening muscles and is often used with beginners and those who have experienced an injury.

If you are looking for something a bit more high-tech, there are several pieces of equipment made especially to work the abs. There are the Ab Crunch Machine and the Back and Ab Machine. The lower back and neck will be supported by each of these pieces of abs exercise equipment. Adjustable resistance settings is another feature.

The Ab Slider, Ab Wheel, and Ab Trainer are other examples of equipment designed to target abdominal muscles. Just as with other exercise equipment, best results can be found with proper use and the addition of other abdominal exercises. It is important to fully research the equipment and read instructions before using.

Flat stomachs and six-pack abs has increased in popularity in the past few years.
