When you suddenly look in the mirror one day and realize you’ve gained a few pounds that you could certainly do without, you have two choices: reduce your caloric intake by eating less calorie, or burn more calories by doing exercises like cardio workouts to lose weight. Those two options really put losing weight into terms that seem too simple, for what can seem like a very complicated problem.

There are plenty of people, whether they would admit it or not; who would rather over-complicate things, rather than go for the simple solution. The truth is you can lose weight quite easily by reducing your daily calories down to less than 1,500 – 2,000 calories per day (for most people). You can also do enough metabolism-boosting weight or cardio workouts to lose weight also (how much depends on how much you consume and how much exercise you do).

You can also seek to reach a happy medium, by combining a reasonable diet plan with weight training, circuit training, or other cardio workouts to lose weight at whichever pace feels comfortable to you. By happy medium we mean you can diet a bit less, and workout a bit less — by combining the two together.

Instead of starving yourself, you can eat a little more than someone who is using only diet changes to lose weight, while perhaps having to put in less time at the aerobics studio than someone who is only using exercise to lose weight.

It takes approximately an hour of walking or running to burn 500-600 calories. Circuit training, aerobics classes and other cardio workouts to lose weight can burn 400-500 calories in a 40 minute session.

Combine that 40 minute session, 3 or 4 times a week, along with cutting back an easy 500 calories from your diet per day and you could easily lose 2 solid pounds of fat a week (fat contains 3,500 calories per pound). This is a relatively conservative estimate, as many of us could eliminate 1,000 calories a day with little effort (E.g., chips, cookies, sodas, juices, etc). Not to mention, as you workout more, your metabolism will increase even while you rest.

For many people the abdominal area is the hardest of all to shape, tone and firm. Some of this has to do with our genetic makeup but a lot of it has to do with our eating and lack of exercise. You can turn a washtub belly into washboard abs with some quick stomach exercises that are made to deliver bang for the buck. What many don’t realize is that your stomach muscles can be exercised daily. You can do stomach exercises and lose that belly fat if you do them at least 3-5 times a week.

Let’s start out easy with The Lift. Lie on your back on the floor. (Use a pillow or towel roll to support the small of your back, if needed). Now keeping your head, back, shoulders and buttocks on the floor, lift your legs about 18 inches from the floor. Your feet should be touching and your legs should be straight. Hold the position for a count of at least 20. Lower your legs just 4 inches and repeat the count of 20. Continue to lower and hold for a count of 20 at least 3 more times. The last count should be done with your legs about 2 inches off the floor. You will feel the pull in the abdominal area with this exercise. Keep your arms flat at your sides and breathe normally with the routine. If you cannot hold the position for the count of 20, start with a shorter count and work your way up until you are able to hold all counts to a total of 30 for each one.

The next belly exercise to blast flab is called The Penguin. With this one you will again lie on your back on a firm surface. Your legs should be together with your heels on the floor. Let your arms rest at your sides. Now slide your right leg to the side a few inches, at the same time take your right arm, and slide it towards the lower leg and ankle, as if to touch it. Keep your shoulders and neck as flat as possible on the floor. Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side. This exercise should resemble the side shuffle seen in penguins. Repeat the routine 30 times on each side. If 30 is too many at first, do what you can until you can do 30 easily.

Crunches are always great to chase away a flabby belly. Many people do not do them correctly so they get minimum results for maximum effort. Try this Ab Crunch Sizzler routine. Lie on the floor on your back with your legs flat and about a shoe length apart at the ankles. Now raise your legs about 6 inches off the floor and at the same time raise your head and shoulders about 4-6 inches off the floor. You can keep your hands flat on the floor or let them rest on your belly. Hold this position for at least a count of 5-10 and release. Repeat this for a total of 30. Only your head and upper shoulders should leave the floor, press your lower back into the floor and do not let your upper back clear the floor.

Raising the back off the floor is a mistake many people make when doing crunches, this strains the back and does not work the abs.

If you make these 3 exercises part of your workout at least 3-5 days a week you will be seeing toned and tighter muscles in just a couple of weeks. In order to blast your belly flab you have to target and work those out of shape abdominals. These exercises are sure belly fat blasters. So why wait? This is not only less time consuming than classical cardio but it has been shown to boost fat loss and give amazing results all around. Just to give an example of why this is great, look at how professional sprinters look (ripped), compared to long distance runners (who often look un-athletic).

If you’re looking to both look good and be able to be strong and powerful for short bursts – than HIIT is for you. There are a couple of ways to do high intensity interval training. The first one is the most used method which most people should probably do. The second one is a method that is really mostly for athletes and people in amazing shape looking to challenge themselves – called the tabata. Either way, you should ask your doctor before starting either method.

Get yourself warmed up for five min. to help not get injured when doing either the tabata or normal method. This is the regular way of doing it:

1. Workout with a cardio workout like running or rowing for 1 minute at med. to high intensity.

2. Relax for one min (don’t do any exercise.

3. Increase how good you are in shape until you can repeat it 8 times.

Here’s the tabata method:

1. Do 30 seconds of super intensity on the exercise.

2. Do 30 seconds of low intensity.

3. Build up until you repeat to 8 times(it comes out to four min).

3. Go for a swim. Going for a swim is an awesome workout becuse it just burns so many calories. The good part about this is it decimates the excess weight/fat and it is also just a good thing to know. The problem with swimming is that it really does decimate and destroy a lot of fat.

This is a problem because you might get hunger-pains and want to eat a lot after a swim. I say that if you have a problem controlling how much you eat after a swim – then you might want to skip on this workout.

If you’re new to swimming, I highly suggest taking some classes with a professional instructor. It’s not only good exercise, but it’ll give you a valuable skill for life. The swims I would say to do when you start are:

1. Crawl.

2. The back-stroke.

3. Breastroke.

I would skip on the butterfly in the beginning. As a note, there are some awesome youtube videos by Jimmy Shea to help improve your form, even for those of you who already know how to swim well.

Another really big advantage to it is that you tend to do much better with your diet when you know you’re going to be seen in a bathing suit all the time. You’ll also get more comfortable with your body as you improve. It’s win-win!

In summary, if you’re looking to get in amazing shape and burn the fat, the burpee, high intensity interval training and swimming are some of the best exercises to lose weight with.
