Kettlebells may seem a little scary or intimidating at first glance, but in truth, there is no better tool to sculpt a lean, feminine physique than the kettlebell.

Used for centuries by Russian strongmen, Special Forces, Olympians and highly tuned athletes alike, the kettlebell has a reputation for getting results. But the results depend on its use – it is just so versatile that it will get results for the elite, but also get elite results for mere mortals – including us women!

Just because the fittest of the fit use them, it does not mean us women shouldn’t be! In fact, we should be using the most effective tools we can find, as the problem we all face with fitness is trying to fit enough into our busy lives to get results. Kettlebells require less time training and get better results – so we can get on with the rest of our lives.

Kettlebells are results in a ball! The exercises combine resistance and intense cardio elements, improve flexibility and stability (stretching alone can improve flexibility but often at the expense of stability, increasing injury risk) and give you true core strength – working abs in isolation does nothing for increasing core strength in real world situations, or for burning fat, whereas kettlebell training achieves both! In addition, the exercises are endlessly varied – no more boredom that’s for sure – and are truly de-stressing.

The key to the kettlebell’s effectiveness is in the unique design. The handle means that you can hold the kettlebell in many different ways, each of which causes the body to work harder to stabilise itself than if you were holding a dumbbell in your hand. This is because the Centre of Gravity is ‘offset’ and it is the core and other stabilising muscles that are required to assist. This means a strong torso, leading to flat and awesome abs, without needing to spend hours directly training them.

The dynamic nature of many of the drills, such as the basic ‘Swing’, gives the back side of your body (yes, your butt!) a truly awesome workout every time, and it won’t be long before the area that usually resists all efforts to ‘tone up’ becomes tight and sculpted! And of course your abs and core will be getting stronger and leaner with every rep.

The Swing is like a squat or deadlift, but you hold the kettlebell by its handle in between your legs, and, letting the arms merely swing as opposed to lifting with the shoulders, you use the power of the hips to propel the bell up to about shoulder height. You absorb it as it falls to the start position by squatting back down. This process causes the back of the legs, butt and lower back to be ‘loaded’ with elastic energy that is then released – you get all the benefits of plyometric training (jumping) without any impact or risk of injury. These benefits include super-lean and toned legs!

A few sets of these and your heart is pounding – a killer cardio workout that is also strengthening and toning! Usual cardio, especially steady, long duration cardio, can cause our muscle tissue to break down. When you add a very low calorie or ‘fad’ diet with insufficient protein to the mix, you get metabolism shutdown. You will lose weight, but this will mainly be lean muscle weight. The fat stays around and when you get back to normal eating you actually need fewer calories (as muscle burns more calories – 14 compared to only 4 per pound at rest for fat) so you will gain weight – the classic ‘Yo-Yo’ cycle that so many of us have been victim of.

By swapping this ineffective cardio for shorter, more intense bursts of kettlebell activity, you rev up the metabolism like crazy. You preserve the lean muscle, blast away the fat, and keep your body burning calories for hours after you have finished. With kettlebells, you are actively encouraged to ensure you get adequate rest and not to spend too long actually training! Unlike regular cardio, where if you’re not getting results, you feel you should just be doing more and more.

For those of us who want results and don’t have time to waste, kettlebells are the key. You only need one, as you can make every exercise harder by using the kettlebell in a different way. Ultimately you will want a whole selection, I’m sure, but that will be because you love them so much – move over shoes, I want a kettlebell in every colour!

One of the biggest myths out there is the myth of women growing big muscles if they lift weights or get into weight training. Old myths are hard to get rid of. I have heard many times from women who haven’t even lifted barbell weight in their life state that they don’t lift weights because they fear getting too big.

First off I’d like to see them try, as any muscle building takes a lot of work even for the smallest amounts of growth and second men and women can only grow so much because of genetics. If lifting weights made everyone huge like you see in magazines you’d see everyone in the gyms looking like that. You rarely see huge bodybuilders around because to get that huge man or women, it takes the help of drugs.

In countless cases women want to lose body fat and the last thing they think of is lifting weights or getting into bodybuilding. That’s because their mind set of bodybuilding is this huge muscular looking figure. Truth is, yes you can create a good figure, but getting “too big” is just about impossible. Here’s the thing. It’s much easier and more interesting to focus on the exercises rather than the weight loss. Building muscles has a greater effect on weight loss than cardio workouts. Because gained muscle burns fat (while you sleep). Go into any gym and you will find most people riding the bikes rather than lifting weights. Because of years of being told cardio workouts are the way to lose weight everyone does it.

Lifting weights will help lose the fat twice as fast and keep it off. Do both is even better. I can’t count how many people I know who lost weight doing cardio workouts like running and bike riding, (cardio workouts, work the heart muscle) only to find that a few weeks later after they slow it down or quit they gain it all back. It takes two weeks to lose cardio shape and it takes months to lose gained muscle.
